The heroes: Jordan Silk and Daniel Hughes combined for a record-breaking partnership to help the Sydney Sixers recover from a precarious position in the KFC BBL fixture at the SCG. The pair combined for a crucial 124-run stand to lift the Sixers to 4-164 after they slipped to 3-30. No.5 Silk contributed an unbeaten 67 from 49 balls and No.4 Hughes made 62 from 44 balls. Hughes hammered Australia T20I bowler Andrew Tye, who snared a hat-trick against the Sixers last season, for consecutive sixes in the 18th over the swing the momentum of the match. Silk also smacked the last ball of the innings from Tye for a maximum over deep mid-wicket. The Sixers finished the innings with a flourish, belting 56 runs from the last five overs.
The supporting cast: Spinner Steve O’Keefe destroyed the Scorchers’ top order to leave the visitors languishing at 3-9. He grabbed the key wickets of Sam Whiteman, Michael Klinger and David Willey to finish with outstanding figures of 3-19 from four overs – his best ever BBL figures. O’Keefe also sent down 13 dot balls. Paceman Sean Abbott was crucial when the match was in the balance and finished with 3-29 from four overs.
The consolation acts: Stand-in skipper Ashton Turner and Hilton Cartwright kept the Scorchers in the match with a 99-run stand after the top order collapse. Cartwright contributed 53 from 39 balls, while Turner made 49 from 39, the pair hitting eight boundaries and a six between them.
The catch I: Sixers import Joe Denly showed off his fielding skills to with a superb diving catch at long on to remove Scorchers No.3 Willey.
