BYU football grades: Cougars dismiss first half, ace Western Michigan in second half

BOISE — BYU overcame uninspired play in the first half to put forth one of the best halves of football Cougar fans have seen in a while in disposing of Western Michigan 49-18 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Friday.
It was a second half that had the feel of BYU football of years past with the Cougars completely overwhelming the Broncos in what was about as perfect of an ending to an otherwise up-and-down season as most fans could have hoped. Grades are in for the performance of all three units with those grades being necessarily high across the board.

Offense

Almost all of the futility put forth in the first half can be more than forgiven by a second half in which the Cougars scored 42 points, including 28 points in the third quarter.
Everything was working and particularly so for freshman quarterback Zach Wilson, who finished a perfect 18 of 18 for 317 yards and four touchdowns. It would be criminal to poke any holes in what Wilson did on Friday, showing poise in the pocket and the type of touch on passes not seen in most true freshmen.
Wilson's play enabled senior Tanner Mangum to come in late, with the Idaho native connecting on his lone throw, a 41-yard completion to Dylan Collie.
As for Collie, he undoubtedly had his best game as a Cougar, scoring two touchdown receptions and catching six passes for 124 yards.
